The purpose of Eyor

Eyor is a personal Android application that lets its owner safely keep up with email, text messages, and news while driving — entirely by voice and a Bluetooth numeric keypad, without looking at or touching the phone.

The name "Eyor" is short for "Eyes On the Road." The app runs full-screen on a car-mounted phone and speaks everything aloud; the screen is only ever a quick glance. Its purpose is to remove the temptation to pick up the phone to check messages while driving, by reading them out and letting the driver respond hands-free with a single keypress or a spoken reply.

Why Eyor uses your Google account

Eyor connects to the owner's Gmail account so that it can, on the owner's behalf and hands-free while driving:

Read new email aloud — announce the sender and subject and read the message body through the car speakers.
Act on a message by voice or keypad — reply (by dictation, with a spoken confirmation before sending), archive, delete, mark as read, or star it to revisit later.

This is the only reason Eyor requests Gmail access. It uses that access solely to provide these hands-free features to the account's owner, and to no one else. Full details are in the Privacy Policy.

A personal project. Eyor is a single-user application built by its developer for his own use in his own car. It is side-loaded onto one phone and is not distributed, sold, or offered to the public. This site exists to describe the app and its privacy practices.

What Eyor does

Eyor is operated one-handed from a Bluetooth numeric keypad, with matching on-screen buttons. Everything important is spoken; the screen is glanceable only.

Email, hands-free. Reads unread Gmail aloud and lets the driver reply by voice, archive, delete, mark read, or star — without looking at the screen.
Text messages. Announces incoming SMS/RCS texts, reads them aloud, and sends dictated replies with a spoken confirmation before anything is sent.
News. Reads headlines and full articles from the owner's self-hosted Nextcloud News feeds.
Media control. A now-playing strip and keypad controls for whatever podcast or audiobook app is playing, so audio keeps going between notifications.
Voice assistant. Ask a question by voice and hear the answer read back.
Save for later. Press * to star the email or article being read, to revisit it later.

Your data stays yours

Eyor accesses the owner's Google account only to provide these features, on the owner's own device, while driving. It does not sell or share data, show ads, or run analytics. Its use of Google user data follows the Google API Services User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.
